One benefit of being a small business which attracts far more work than we can handle is that we’re able to pick and choose the jobs we take on. Location and schedule requirements play a role, but more often than not, the determining criteria is the customer, not the technical aspects of the job itself.
Case in point: a New Yorkers who recently moved to Eastham asked us for a proposal to clean an asphalt roof. The roof was well overdue for maintenance cleaning: some areas should have been cleaned several years ago, as they are now a fair bed of moss and lichen. This is a job which will take care and patience (time: months) to rid the asphalt roof of this organic growth without causing more damage to the already-compromised shingles.
The homeowner, though, had two quotes in hand already from other local roof cleaning companies, both of which promised an “instantly” clean roof with zero harm to the shingles, etc etc etc. She wasn’t going to entertain any notions to the contrary. The old phrase came to mind, “It’s easier to fool someone than to convince them that they’ve been fooled.”
So, what do I do? Spend my time trying to educate her, or shift my attention to the list of homeowners who have done their research, have a sense of the
snakepit that is the roof cleaning industry, and are waiting for me to talk with them about their particular roof? In the old days I would have squandered my time, but those days are long gone. Life's too short.
I’ve said it before more times than I can count: this exterior cleaning industry (and the roof cleaning industry in particular) is the Wild West, full of Snake Oil salesmen pitching Miracle Cures and magic elixirs. They’ll say
whatever they need to in order to get your business; to get their commission; to keep the cash flowing. It’s bad.
For those who will believe whatever a salesman tells them, I recommend not ever having your roof cleaned. Your roof will likely last longer with zero maintenance than it will by being cleaned in a inappropriate or forceful manner.
